JDM to USDM Installation & Swap Guide

To ensure 100% compatibility and prevent a Check Engine Light (CEL) using your original ECU, professional Subaru technicians recommend the following “External Swap” steps:

  1. Intake & Exhaust Manifolds: You must transfer your original USDM Intake Manifold and Exhaust Manifold. JDM versions may have different vacuum routing and often lack specific emissions sensors required for North American OBDII compliance.

  2. Wiring Harness: Always retain and use your original USDM Engine Wiring Harness. JDM harnesses are configured for right-hand drive and will not interface with your Legacys chassis bulkhead.

  3. Camshaft & Crankshaft Sprockets: You must swap your original USDM Camshaft Sprocket (Driver Side) and Crankshaft Sprocket. The “trigger points” for the sensors on JDM pulleys can differ, which will cause a “No Start” or timing codes if not swapped.

  4. Engine Sensors: Transfer your original USDM Camshaft and Crankshaft Sensors. These are “known-good” for your vehicles electrical system.

  5. EGR System: Many JDM EJ25 engines do not come equipped with an EGR port on the driver-side cylinder head. If your USDM Legacy requires EGR, ensure you verify the port or utilize a block-off/adapter strategy as needed.

  6. Oil Pan: Inspect the JDM oil pan; if the donor vehicle was a different chassis (like a Forester or Exiga), swap your original USDM Oil Pan and Pickup to ensure proper subframe clearance.
